With the summer truly behind us and the rain setting in, this was a rather damp and wet affair for both the team and spectators alike.  The girls were looking for revenge today after narrowly losing on penalties to Outwards in the U11 Plate Final (2019/20 season) just a few weeks ago.  It was time to test the opposition’s metal on the muddy grass!

It did not take too long for the one and only goal to come, but not in the way we like to play. Grace put a lovely cross into the goal area, which hit one of the defender’s knees and unfortunately for Outwoods sent the ball to the back of their own net. Own goal!

The first half saw a few more chances with Lucy very active up the left wing with some very clever interplay with both Emma and Ava who put in some superb balls forward, not to mention the numerous great corners put in by Phoebe. A cross in from Mimi sent the ball just left of goal and another from Grace just wide again. Outwood’s too had several breaks, but Daisy and Kathryn were solid at the back in stopping any real attack, such that Evie in goal was never really tested.

The rain continued into the second half with a lively start from Isobel upfront and some good runs in from Caoimhe, with Lucie starting off much of the action with some great throws in from the side-lines. Lucy continued to be a threat upfront with a lovely loop kick which went over the bar. Grace too had a great run up the right wing only to slip on the muddy grass, but like a trooper she got straight up again managing to win the ball back!

Phoebe continued her great delivery in from the corner spot with another fine attempt by Mimi hitting the bar. A further run starting with Daisy at the back passing to Caoimhe through to Mimi saw the ball hit the back of the net but unfortunately ruled offside.  Another chance saw Ava direct a pass through to Immie, who with an impressive overhead, swizel kick, had an exciting shot at goal with a whoop from the crowd.

Daisy continued to be a strong last line of defence with reinforcement from Emma who provided seamless delivery into the midfield. A great corner taken by Caoimhe saw the last chance of the game with the ball falling right in front of goal, but somehow Outwoods managed to clear. A neat scoop up of the ball at the other end by Evie right before the final whistle ensured that Outwoods were not going to get the equalizer!

Neither penalties nor an own goal are an ideal way to settle a game, but arguably we had our revenge today.  Special mention to Phoebe, who if she wasn’t taking brilliant corners was working her socks off upfront, and again to Daisy for maintaining such a solid discipline in defence.
