“Grab Opportunity With Both Hands” says Boss Sam Griffiths

Derby County Women’s Boss Sam Griffiths believes Sunday’s FA Cup clash with Huddersfield Town is an opportunity not to be missed for her squad and the club.

The Ewe Rams go into the match with a chance to equal the furthest they’ve ever got in the FA Cup back on 2009 when they were knocked out by Chelsea and Griffiths is confident her side can make a 5th round date with either WSL side Brighton & Hove Albion or Bristol City.

Griffiths said “We’re really excited about Sunday’s game, it’s going to be a fantastic opportunity for us or Huddersfield to test ourselves against WSL competition and now we’ve got to go out there and grab that with both hands.

“We’re coming off the back of two really good performances and I couldn’t have asked for more from the whole squad, they have slotted back into the routine seamlessly and I think because we’re all wanting to carry on playing for as long as possible this season, they’ve motivated themselves to do that.

“We showed a different kind of game against WBA last week. We all know that they have that physical aspect and that’s what makes them a tough game. They have match winners in their squad but we pretty much nullified there strengths and in the end it was fairly routine as we matched them with that physical threat and ultimately came out on top.”

Sunday’s game will pose a different threat to the Ewe Rams and Griffiths knows all about the strengths of the Terriers and how they will pose their own threat on Sunday.

“They were top of the table before the league was curtailed for a reason, they are so consistent and like us, they are a team that have a talented squad which always helps if injuries or form necessitate a change of personnel.

“It’s been a while since we played them, we didn’t manage to get any match against them in during the season and since the last time we played them, they’ve had a new management team so whilst much of the personnel remain the same, they will no doubt have a different style to previous games.

“They were took to penalties by Brighouse last week and came through which shows their mental resilience too and we’re not expecting that extra time and penalties to have taken much extra out of them, so it’s going to be two teams on form, going at it full tilt and I’m confident that we can go there and get the result that we want.”
