Ewe Rams return from season pause with emphatic FA Cup win

Derby County Women progressed through to the 3rd Round of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup with a crushing 6-0 win at fellow National League North side Loughborough Foxes, to set up a clash with West Brom Women next weekend.

A first-half strike from the returning Ellie Gilliatt, set the tone for game, before the Ewe Rams took firm control in the second-half with Gilliatt adding her second, a Sophie Domingo brace and a goal apiece for Precious Hamilton and Kira Rai ensuring their passage through to the next round.

With only two sessions together before the clash with the Foxes, Boss Sam Griffiths opted to bring the returning Gilliatt straight into the starting line-up with Sherry McCue moving up from centre-back to holding midfield and skipper Hannah Ward coming into the back-line.

The Ewes settled quickly and were rewarded inside the opening 2 minutes as Gilliatt was slotted through on goal before rounding the Foxes goalkeeper to slot into an empty net for an early lead.

That seemed to galvanise the visitors further as they had a hatful of chances to extend their lead in the first-half and looking dangerous each time the went forward with the front three of Gilliatt, Domingo and Jodie Michalska linking up well throughout a first-half dominated by the Ewes.

The second-half began with Loughborough looking to get an early foothold in the game, but they were undone by poor defending as Domingo capitalised to add Derby’s second, chasing down the ball before, it ricocheted into her path for her to fire home.

Moments later, Domingo added her second of the game when a quick corner wasn’t dealt with by the home side, with the in-form striker ably to pick her spot in the bottom corner to give the Ewe Rams firm breathing space in a cup-tie.

As with the first-half, every time Derby went forward, they looked dangerous and substitute Hamilton added the 4th after fellow sub Rai was hauled down in the box for a stonewall penalty.

Gilliatt forced a superb save from former Ewe Rams Goalkeeper Amy Burle, with a rasping shot that was superbly tipped over the bar, but she finally got her second of the game, slotting home inside the box after causing problems all game for the home side.

The final goal of the game came from Rai who sealed the win with her own drive inside the box and comfortably set the Ewe Rams up for a 3rd round clash with West Brom Women after they came through own 2nd Round clash with Lincoln City Women with a 5-2 victory.
