Ewe Rams ‘Derby’ Challenge Raising Vital Funds for Derby & Burton Hospitals Charity

Since the start of the latest National Lockdown, members from across the Ewe Rams including the 1st Team, Academy teams and Staff have been taking part in a charity challenge to raise funds for the Derby & Burton NHS Hospital Trust.

The challenge was set-up to run/walk/cycle as many miles as possible over the course of the lockdown and to date members of the club have accumulated 1,785 miles towards its goal of virtually visiting as many places called Derby in the USA, in itself a hotbed for Women’s Football.

With 17 places in the USA called Derby and the shortest possible route through all of them, accumulating a huge 6,513 miles, members have made inroads into the total number of miles and already covered over 25% of the total and Academy Director Dave Cholerton has been wowed by the effort put in.

Cholerton said “I’m so proud to see how far members of the club have managed to accumulate so far, it’s a mammoth total to try and achieve and to do over 25% already is brilliant and with the ambiguous end dates of the lockdown, we’ve decided to extend the challenge to the end of the season.

“Hopefully, we can get to as many of these places called Derby in America as possible, we have reached out to see if we can find some local women’s soccer teams in these areas that we could link up with to say hello and hopefully we’ll be able to find one.

“One of the reasons why we set-up the challenge was to ensure that we were keeping ourselves fit both physically and mentally whilst in these strange times and I’m a firm believer in keeping fit makes the mind fit. If we can fundraise and raise valuable money to go with this then it’s a bonus.

“We’d love for more club members to get involved and any donations to this worth cause would be fantastic. I know we’ll have all reflected this past week on the last year and raising money for the NHS as our Thank You to everyone is something we are delighted to do.”

With close to £300 already raised, the target of £1000 is well in sight and funds are being raised to provide lockers for patients to charge their phones and Alan Osbourne, Deputy General Manager of Derby’s Children Hospital said

“We are really pleased to have Derby County Women raise valuable funds for the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust, every penny raised does so much to give back to our patients and ensure that everything is in place to enhance their stay with us.

“These funds will go towards providing safe and secure cabinets that have integral charging points for patients to use on the wards to store their mobile phones and iPad / Tablets etc.

“It is important that use of mobile phones and iPad / Tablets is healthy and does not impact in a negative way on CYP, their friends / family and other patients or their families whilst in our care. Ward staff will work with CYP to promote healthy use of mobile phones and iPad / Tablets in terms of when they are used during the day and avoiding heavy usage at night or prior to going to sleep.”
