Derby County Football Club Women

Meet…… Leah Kellogg

Being apart of Derbyshire’s most famous sporting families has rubbed off on Ewe Rams Goalkeeper Leah Kellogg and the multi-sport talent, who also captains Derbyshire Women’s cricket team, wouldn’t have it any other way.

Since Joining Derby County FC Women at the start of the 2018/19 season, the shot-stopper has made 25 appearances for the club and believes that joining the Ewe Rams has been a highlight of her career.

Kellogg said “When Sam (Griffiths) got in touch I was really happy that I’d got a move to a club in the league above, I wanted to join the club for many reasons but mainly because of the vision of the club and what they wanted to achieve in the coming seasons.

“Hopefully one day I can play in the Championship with Derby that is my dream anyway and we are sitting nicely in 2nd place, which is great for us as a club; we are gutted about this break as we were just finding a good run of form in the league.

“Personally, I really felt I had found some good form and was playing with confidence so hopefully when/if we get back at it this season I can continue this and prove to Sam why I should be starting.”

Being a multi-sports talent in both cricket and football, some will be surprised to know that Leah only took up the game at the age of 20 and wasn’t always a goalkeeper and she hopes she can inspire anyone to take up football.

“I started playing at university so started very late when I was about 20. Our university manager was the manager of Long Eaton and told me to come down to training so I did (playing outfield). The keeper then was injured and I said I would go in net and then it carried on from there.

“I think if I was to give advice to those looking to do something, particularly when we are having these issues across the world is to not to stop and it is never too late, I didn’t start until late and I feel I have achieved a lot so far with more to come.

“Seeing younger children come to games and want photos, selfies etc. it is great to see for us. We defiantly look to inspire them to take up football and keep playing so they can one day play for Derby like us.”

So what does does a multi-sports talent and a PE Teacher do in the little spare time that she has? Well you’d probably not be surprised to find out what she gets up too!

“I am a PE teacher and It can be very hard with training and also playing cricket at semi-professional level too. It can be stressful and tiring, but I love football and wouldn’t change it for the world.”

“Unsurprisingly I watch a lot of football in my spare time it was also always on the television in our house so I have grown up watching top football too and watching my brothers and looking up to them as role models, it was never really going to be anything else though these days I also go out socialising with my friends whenever possible.

“I’m proud to be a sportswomen and Winning The ‘Women in Sport’ award at the Derby Telegraph Sports Awards for my contribution to sport and charity work for my brother shows the commitment I put into anything I do.

“I’d love to see more people at our games going forward so, Stay safe, look after your yourself, your friends and your family and we’ll see you at our games soon!”
