Griffiths “Frustration as Old Issues Re-Surface”

Derby County Women Boss Sam Griffiths was a frustrated figure after the 3-3- draw with Loughborough Foxes in the opening game of the FA Women’s National League Northern Division.

Despite taking an early lead, the Ewe Rams were pegged back by the Foxes and were left thankful of the calmness of midfielder Callan Barber’s penalty to earn a point, leaving Griffiths looking for more from her side.

Griffiths said “I’ve got mixed feelings on that one, I’m disappointed because we wanted to take three points from the first game of the season, we’ve never underestimated Loughborough and we knew it would be a tough game.

“Even though we’ve got, what I would class as three key starters not available today, I still felt the team we put out was strong enough and good enough to go out and win this game.

“I’ve said it numerous times last season, it’s been a game of two halves. we’ve had chances in the first-half to score more but allowed Loughborough back into the game and to then go ahead.

“The second-half we’ve worked much harder and we need to put the two together really and take our chances, work hard across the ninety minutes and not just a half.”

Next up sees the Ewe Rams travel to take on local rivals Nottingham Forest Women this weekend and Griffiths is hoping her side can up their levels and stop the individual errors that cost them on Sunday.

“I think our problem in the first-half against Loughborough was that we didn’t compete and we lost our physical one-on-one battles and you can’t afford to do that against any side in this league.

“Going a goal up early can send you one of two ways and you need that intensity across the whole game but we also can’t get away that from the fact that individual errors have contributed to all their goals.

“We know that we need to cut these out and fortunately or perhaps unfortunately whichever way you look at it, we’ve seen the other results and all I can hope is that we don’t look back at this game later and think what if.”
