Derby County Football Club Women

Academy Report with Dave Cholerton

It seemed a long time coming, but the competitive season began last weekend in interesting circumstances for Derby County Women’s Academy.

Five of our Academy teams opened their 2020/21 season with a cup game from last season which included four cup finals. These games involved our u10, u11, u12 and u14 teams.

The u13 white socks, had a semi final game versus Melbourne. Unfortunately, the team could only field 8 players, due to new signings being cup tied but the girls gave a great account of themselves in an end to end game.

The u11 and 12 teams played Outwoods u12 and Burton u13 respectively and these games were decided by penalties with both of the Ewe Rams teams losing.

The u11 game finished 0-0 and the u12 1-1 after normal time with the teams unfortunate not to win the game as both teams missed great scoring opportunities. The teams will have used these games to prepare them for the new league season.

The u10, in their first season together, played Belper. The Ewe Rams won 3-0 with goals from Niamh, Daisy and Keira but Belper played their part in creating a great game.

The u14, in what was the last game in the DGL before they move to the Warwickshire League, played Hilton u15 in an entertaining game that finished 11-4 to Derby. Despite losing early in the game, Derby developed into the game creating many scoring opportunities which were taken by Charlie 6, Liv 4 and India.

The u13 black socks, returning to league action with the DGL, drew 1-1 against Heanor u14 with Lily scoring Derby’s goal in what was described as a cracker by the coaching team.

The u15, u16 and u18 opened their league season in the Warwickshire league, hoping for another competitive season. The u15 went down 2-1 to a late goal against Coventry United with Amber scoring Derby’s goal.

The u16 and u18 recorded 3 points in their first game, 3-1 and 4-3 respectively. Hannah 2 and Abbie scored the goals for the u16 and the u18s winner was scored in the 98th minutes with a 40 yard strike by Angelina.

The u10 Sunday team, made their debut in the Derby Junior League, giving two great performances against Stanton and the Stenson Rams.

Development is the aim for every player in the Academy and we hope that the new season will present challenging games as the open weekend has in order to achieve that aim.
