Derby County Football Club Women

Academy Report with Dave Cholerton

This season still remains a challenge for us all as both players, parents and administrators of the club and as I write this report, there is talk of more restrictions coming into force.

I hope that grassroots football will be able to continue, the way that clubs on the whole have responded to the challenges to get this season up and running has been admirable and I don’t see why we can’t continue should more restrictions come into force.

However, as we have so far, we will abide by what ever decision there is but in the mean time the great start to the season has continued for all our sides.

Our Under 20 side are playing in the East Midlands Women’s Regional Football League this season which is an adults league. This is no mean feat as most of these players are still only 18 and they got their first win last weekend.

A 2-0 win at Thrapston Town Ladies has given them a great boost to their confidence and they go into Sunday’s game with AFC Leicester Girls with a chance to continue that form.

The Under 18’s (6-0 winners) and Under 16’s (5-1 winners) remain unbeaten in their first four games of the season to date which is another great sign for the future of this club and bringing these players through to senior level.

Elsewhere in the Central Warwickshire Girls League, the Under 15’s have bounced back from their opening day defeat to sit joint top after a 6-0 win at Kingshurst Pavillion.

The Under 13 Black Socks were heavy winners over Matlock with a 15-2 scoreline, whilst the Under 13 White Socks and Under 12’s continued their unbeaten start with wins, all in the Derbyshire Girls League.

Our final game last weekend saw the Under 11’s edged a narrow contest with an equally impressive Outwoods side.

This week weekend will hopefully see another great week of development, it’s pleasing to see that we are now back at our usual training venues at both Leesbrook and Merrill.

Our fingers are crossed that going back will give the squads more normality and that this doesn’t change again with this horrible period that is causing havoc.

Stay safe and thanks for your support!
