Derby County Football Club Women

A Look Ahead…. With Callan Barber

Derby County Women are getting ready to host AFC Fylde Women in matchday six of the FA Women’s National League Northern Division as both sides look to cement their place in a Top 4 clash this afternoon at Mickleover FC.

Ewe Rams will approach the game with confidence, following a comprehensive 1-5 away win over Sheffield Ladies last weekend to extend their winning run to three in a row. The team put together a number of convincing spells during the match, overwhelming the opposition.

“It’s always a tough game against Fylde, we’ve seen that over the last couple of seasons but if we come with the same attitude that we have over the last few games, start the game well, we’ll be looking to get the points”,

Barber knows her, and fellow teammates need to be at their best against a tough opposition and recognises the importance to approach training well and carry over the positive attitude that has stood the team in such good stead.

“We need to make sure we stay focused”, a mistake at the back for the Sheffield goal was the only blip on a great afternoon for Derby but Barber knows that it isn’t something to be too concerned about, due to the “limiting of their opportunities”

“We knew we had a couple more gears left in us”, a resounding 5-1 away victory for Derby was extremely impressive and despite a comfortable win, Barber was pleased with the style and character of the game.

“Getting early goals in the first and second halves was the key factor, I think we found a little more space and managed to move Sheffield around a bit more which allowed us to find the space in the middle of the park”

Barber scored her first goal from open play this season, and her two goals against Sheffield FC Women brings her joint top of the scoring charts for Ewe Rams this season.

“Apparently I’m joint top-scorer so far this season which is nice but rare and to get one from open play is pleasing, I’ve took the penalties for a while now and i’m confident taking them so it’s great all round.:

Sam Griffith’s side will be desperate to extend their winning run, and three points against a notoriously tough opposition at the weekend to extend that will make a real statement that Derby are a serious candidate this season
